Sybil Cobb Wilder died peacefully on October 20th in Roanoke Rapids, NC after a long and courageous struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Sybil was the daughter of the late John M. Cobb and Annie Smith Cobb of Halifax, NC. She was preceded in death by Shelton Wilder, Jr., her high school sweetheart and beloved husband of 55 years and her two brothers, John Cobb, Jr. and Gene Cobb.

She is survived by her son, Shelton Wilder, III, and daughter-in-law, Delores Wilder of Deep Gap, NC, and her daughter, Donna Wilder of Chapel Hill, NC. Mrs. Wilder enjoyed her two grandchildren, Emily Wilder of Salisbury, NC and Ian Quattlebaum of Raleigh, NC.

She is also survived by her dear nieces, Gayle Cobb, Lynn Planer, Cindy Owen, and Gloria Fagin of Georgia, Laura Cobb Faulkner of Nashville, NC; nephews, Arnold Gene Cobb, Jr. of Sanford, NC and Steve Cobb of Tarboro, NC.

Ellen Yates of Roanoke Rapids provided loving care and companionship for the last few years of her life. Joyce Balmer and Jean Arnold provided her with many hours of loving care and companionship. Lisa Atkins has been a close friend for many years and her daughter “little Emily” was a joy in Sybil’s life.

Sybil’s extended family included Leroy and Laura Wilder, Nancy and Randolph Williams, Ella Faye and Charles Gibbs, and Joe and Elaine Wilder who provided much loving care to Sybil and her children.

Sybil worked for Moody and Brown, CPA in Roanoke Rapids for 30 years and was always willing to assist family and friends with income tax questions. She and Shelton enjoyed traveling with friends and family. Their adventures took them from the Islands of Hawaii to the mountains of Switzerland and throughout the United States.

She took great joy in her flower gardens enjoying lilies, daffodils, and most especially pansies. Her backyard fishponds and waterfalls gave her many hours of pleasure.

Her many joys were discovered from her simple and loving attention to nature and to children. Her insight and compassion for all living things was a gift to all who knew her.

Sybil’s love of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews was evident in all of her thoughts and actions. She loved to decorate gifts, hide toys, and give special memories to all of her children.

Shelton and Sybil Wilder were together as partners, companions, caregivers, and friends for 55 years of devoted marriage. Their joy remains an inspiration to all who remember them as a couple.

Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends on Saturday, October 23, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 24, at 2:00 p.m. at Rosemary United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Bell officiating and Rev. Gene Cobb delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
